Designed for Gravity-Fed Filtration
Unlike refrigerator or under-sink cartridges that depend on pressurized plumbing, the BB9-2 elements are designed for gravity-fed water filtration systems.
Water is placed into the upper chamber of the filtration system and passes through the filter elements into the lower chamber. No electrical power, pump or dedicated plumbing connection is required.
This makes gravity-fed filtration useful for:
- Everyday household drinking water
- Countertop filtration
- Backup water filtration
- Camping and outdoor applications
- Travel and emergency preparedness
- Gravity-fed water filtration systems
Filtration Capacity
A pair of Black Berkey BB9-2 elements is listed with a filtration capacity of up to 6,000 gallons before replacement is recommended. Amazon likewise states that each pair can last up to 6,000 gallons, while the Discount Filter Store lists a 60-month filter life.
Actual service life can vary based on:
- Source-water quality
- Sediment levels
- Water chemistry
- Frequency of use
- Volume of water filtered
Elements may require replacement sooner when filtering heavily contaminated or sediment-rich source water.
Contaminant Reduction
The competitor documentation describes Black Berkey elements as being tested by independent laboratories and designed to reduce a broad range of contaminants found in water. Amazon describes the original BB9-2 elements as using a proprietary combination of filtration media and cites testing for more than 250 typical contaminants.
Discount Filter Store lists potential reductions involving categories and substances such as:
- Chlorine taste and odor
- Heavy metals
- Lead
- Mercury
- Aluminum
- Arsenic
- Copper
- Iron
- Manganese
- Sediment
- Silt
- Turbidity
- VOCs
- Pharmaceuticals
- Pesticides
- Certain chemicals and organic compounds
Important: Actual contaminant-reduction performance depends on the specific filter, test conditions and source-water characteristics. Do not interpret this list as a guarantee that every contaminant is removed from every water source.
